What is SEO?

This user wants to research accommodations and types in “Hotels in Switzerland” into the search engine. And not just hotels, they might be looking for a ski chalet, a holiday rental apartment or a B&B, or ski resorts in general. To be more specific, a ‘chalet in the mountains,’ ‘a house by the lake,’ ‘ski-in ski-out’ or ‘luxury chalet with hot tub or pool,’ and also in a certain town in Switzerland e.g. Zermatt, Crans Montana, Verbier. Without SEO, the site may only be visible on the first page of the results. Always use keywords specific to target your audience to get potential customers to click your page, and not only generalized keywords.

How to Do SEO for a Website

SEO isn’t the only key component to optimize a website, as you need to focus on other important aspects to boost your customer base.

1. Include SEO in Permalinks

The URL or link to your post is an important factor for readership. When you write a post title, a permanent link is automatically updated under the same title, but this may not be the best search term. For instance, you have written a post called “Eight Ways to Reach a Wider Audience and Increase Visibility to Your Blog” and its automatic URL is: /eight-ways-to-reach-a-wider-audience-and-increase-visibility-to-your-blog.html. Ask yourself this: what is the likelihood that someone will enter exactly these exact words? Change the name of the URL to what you would type in the search engine to look for such a post, for example, “how to increase traffic to your blog” or “blog tips to attract more users.”

2. Write High-Quality Content

Don’t forget, your content is what engages readers. Posts must have quality and be grammatically correct. For SEO, it’s important how long an article is. The more words you write, the more the search engine values your post. Each post should have a minimum of 300 words. Also, publish posts on a regular basis, as search engines will take this into account, that your site is active and frequently updated, and will place it higher on the search results.

3. Place SEO Keywords Throughout

Each blog post has different keywords. For this article, it is “SEO for Beginners”. These words should be in the title of the post, the URL, the first and last paragraph of the post, in the text throughout the post, and the names of images you show. As long as they don’t disrupt the flow of the article, put them in!

4. Hyperlink Your Existing Content

If the post you are currently writing is related to another post you’ve already written, link it! Always hyperlink your content to other posts and pages on your blog! This will enable users to discover more content and land on other pages on your site. Similar to writing long posts and updating regularly, Google’s algorithm will take note and prioritize your website on the search result.

5. Change the Names of Images

The names of your photos should not be IMG2437 (or worse 1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc.) Many people search based on images. By giving your photo a valid name, it will also appear when a search is made. By following these steps, you should see the difference in your site traffic within a few months!

If for some reason the image is unable to load, the browser will be left with the alt text, and it doesn’t look good if you didn’t bother to change the name.
